The Night That Gerald Parsons Was Hung - February 03

Gerald has occasionally been known to accept a small house red, when he's not drinking lager

It is a tradition at the Chequers.... to hang our regulars....on the wall. Visitors will notice that there are four portraits hanging on the wall of the Flagstones Bar.

After sixty years of 'devotion to duty', the locals decided it was 'high time' that Gerald Parsons was honoured in the customary way. They commissioned local artist Mary Bingham from Ellens Green for the portrait. There was a magnificent turn out for the hanging ceremony and the champagne flowed. There was only one logical place to hang the portrait and that was directly above Gerald's 'throne'.

Although most of us agree that the portrait is an exceptionally good likeness of our most senior local, art does provoke some strong (and often contrary) opinions. For instance, the director of a London Gallery (we can't say which), wrote to us saying,

"Have visitors to the Chequers at Rowhook noticed the remarkable lack of similarity between Gerald Parsons, the Chequers regular, and the handsome, good humoured and altogether sympathetic character featured in the portrait in the Flagstones Bar? In my expert opinion they are clearly not related".

But we say, "Beauty is entirely in the eye of the beholder"!

Rowhook Residents Association Meetings
Residents association meetings are held in the Top Bar on the first Tuesday of each month. Meetings commence at 7.00 p.m. and conclude at 7.10 p.m. A fringe meeting continues in the Flagstones Bar until all are happy that they have put Rowhook (and the World) to rights - so that would be about closing time.
